Stark in Broadstairs became the Isle’s first Michelin starred restaurant in 2020, with 1 Michelin Star. It is a small, intimate restaurant offering only a seasonal, six course tasting menu with the option of matching wines.
Angela’s fish and seafood restaurant in Margate has recently been recognised as a Michelin Green Star Restaurant, highlighting them as a role model for sustainable practices.
Also listed in the Michelin Guide 2022 is Sargasso, a small wine bar with food on Margate’s harbour arm and Italian restaurant Bottega Caruso, in Margate Old Town. Wyatt and Jones in Broadstairs is also listed, they serve small plates of authentic, natural and well-sourced produce cooked over fire.
The Isle boasts two breweries and a high concentration of micro-pubs, 12 of which are listed in the Good Beer Guide 2022. The Ramsgate Brewery is well-known for its Gadds beer and the NorthDown Brewery won ‘Kent Beer of the Year’ in the Taste of Kent Awards 2020. Cliftonville Farmers’ Market (last Sunday of each month excluding December) and Quex Barn in Birchington, are popular sources of local goodies, whilst foodies are spoiled for choice at Broadstairs’ Food Festival, which takes place annually at the end of September / early October.
Numerous places serve great local fish ‘n chips while the traditional taste of the seaside holiday can be experienced at Mannings, a family-run cockle and whelk stall which also sells oysters and champagne, and Cannons seafood stall in Margate.
No trip to the seaside would be complete without a trip to the ice cream parlour. Here you can experience traditional 1950s ice cream parlours serving homemade gelato and contemporary seafront businesses offering a modern flavour twist or vegan options. Morrelli’s in Broadstairs was founded in 1932 and retains a classic ice cream parlour atmosphere with its soda fountain, juke box, formica tops and pink leatherette booths.
Did you know that 2022 marked the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Vegetarian Society, in Ramsgate, on 30th September 1847. Today, there is a growing number of venues offering delicious vegetarian and vegan cuisine.
